When most people think about Canada and sports, the first thing that may come to mind is Hockey. Then immediately following this will be football. Although Canada may not be as prominent in this sport as the US, they run a close second.
The start of Canadian football dates back to the 1960s when it was called rugby football, then over time, it became known as Canadian football. It is very similar to football in the United States, but it does have some differences. The first game for this sport that is on record was played in 1861. It was held at the University of Toronto. One of the many that played in this particular game was Sir William Mulock, who went on to become the chancellor of the school. The game was so popular that it didn’t take long before a league was formed at the school.
The Modern Game of Today
While this first game was played on this site, it was considered as being the start of the actual game as it is played today, this didn’t take place until 1865. It came about as a result of the sport of rugby. This form of the game resulted as a group of British soldiers played against some civilians. It was such a popular event that it led to a football club being formed in Montreal. No longer was it considered to be just a school sport.
In the Schools
One of the factors that lead to the popularity of this game is that it is played in many of the schools at different levels, becoming more prominent at the high school levels. Then from there, it branches out into semi-professional levels. These include leagues like the Canadian Junior Football League and the Quebec Junior Football Leagues, with all competing for the Vanier Cup. These leagues are comprised of players between the ages of eighteen to twenty-two.
